The Superwoman & Mental Health
African American women have often been identified as a high-risk group for depression. Several factors may contribute to the impact that depression has on African American women, such as socio-political factors like lower socioeconomic status, inadequate levels of education, and limited access to healthcare resources. Although in the past, these factors have been the primary factors that were considered to be related to the mental health of African American women, today, we understand that other cultural and historical factors may also impact the development of depression and other forms of psychological distress among Black women.
In recent years, feminist scholars and social scientists have begun to take a critical look at the myth of the “strong Black woman” or Superwoman role on the health and psychological well-being of Black women. The strong Black woman ideal is also well known as "The Superwoman Schema." This "schema" or mental concept of the Superwoman is rooted in the historical contexts of Black women, and further developed based on the lived experiences of Black women. This mental concept of the Superwoman serves as a guide to how one thinks and behaves. Although the Superwoman Schema has regularly encouraged African American women to embody strength in the face of adversity; the endorsement of this role may often lead to the suppression of emotions which may leave Black women vulnerable to depression and other mental and physical health problems.
The Surrendering of Superwoman (S.O.S) Group is inspired by Dr. Cheryl Giscombe's research on the Superwoman Schema, which explores the pressures many women face to excel in multiple roles while suppressing their own needs and emotions. This therapy group provides a supportive environment for women to explore and challenge the unrealistic expectations of being a "superwoman." Through guided discussions, reflective exercises, and evidence-based strategies, participants learn to recognize and release the burdens of perfectionism and self-sacrifice. The group focuses on fostering self-compassion, setting healthy boundaries, and prioritizing self-care, enabling women to lead more balanced and fulfilling lives. Join us to connect with other women on this journey and liberate yourself from the superwoman way of thinking.
Motivation & The Working Mom

Women have often faces challenges when it comes to career and motherhood. Women are often faces with having to sacrifice their goals for the sake of children and family.
Research on the impact of motherhood on women’s career aspirations and goal attainment highlights several key findings:
Career Aspirations
-
Career Interruptions: Many women experience career interruptions during pregnancy and after childbirth. A study by the Pew Research Center found that 42% of mothers reduced their work hours and 27% quit their job at some point for family reasons .
-
Shift in Priorities: Motherhood often leads to a shift in career priorities. Research published in the "Journal of Family Issues" indicates that some women choose to change their career paths to attain better work-life balance, which can involve moving to less demanding or more flexible roles .
-
Long-Term Impact: A longitudinal study in the "American Sociological Review" revealed that women who take time off for childbirth and child-rearing face long-term earnings penalties and slower career progression compared to their male counterparts and women without children .
Goal Attainment
-
Barriers to Advancement: Motherhood can present barriers to career advancement. According to a study in "Gender & Society," women with children are often perceived as less committed to their jobs, which can hinder promotions and professional growth .
-
Support Systems: The availability of support systems, such as family leave policies and childcare options, significantly influences a mother’s ability to attain her career goals. Countries with more generous parental leave policies show less impact on women’s career trajectories post-childbirth .
-
Psychological Impact: Research in the "Journal of Applied Psychology" found that while motherhood can increase stress and time pressures, it can also enhance certain skills such as time management, multitasking, and empathy, which can be beneficial in professional settings .
Positive Outcomes
-
Increased Motivation: Some studies suggest that motherhood can increase motivation to succeed professionally. The "Journal of Business and Psychology" reported that many mothers feel a renewed sense of purpose and drive to provide for their families and serve as role models for their children .
-
Enhanced Skills: Motherhood can lead to the development of valuable skills that are transferable to the workplace, such as problem-solving, patience, and resilience. These skills can contribute positively to career success and goal attainment .
These findings underscore the complex and multifaceted impact of motherhood on women’s careers and highlight the importance of supportive workplace policies and societal attitudes in mitigating challenges and enhancing positive outcomes.
